The first second of a TikTok decides whether someone watches or swipes. These hook formulas are used by creators who consistently land on the For You Page:
Start with something unexpected that makes viewers need to see what happens next.
"I tried [topic] for 30 days and the results were not what I expected..."
Call out your target audience immediately so they feel like the video was made for them.
"If you struggle with [topic], stop scrolling — this is for you"
Show a before/after or expectation vs. reality that makes viewers curious about the transformation.
"What I thought [topic] would be like vs. what actually happened"
Promise a payoff that makes viewers watch to the end, which improves your completion rate.
"Watch until the end to see why this [topic] method actually works"
TikTok's algorithm decides whether to show your video to more people based primarily on completion rate — the percentage of viewers who watch your video all the way through. A strong hook reduces early drop-off, which signals to the algorithm that your content is worth distributing.
All four of these metrics start with your hook. If viewers swipe away in the first second, none of the other signals matter.
