What people use word clouds for

A word cloud surfaces the themes buried inside a lot of text. It works best when the input is a genuine sample of language — not a tidy list.

Customer reviews & NPS verbatims

Drop 50–500 review snippets in and see the words customers actually use to describe your product. Great for naming a feature the way your buyers name it.

Survey open-text answers

Turn a free-text question ("What do you want to see next?") into a one-glance summary for a slide.

Content audits

Paste a long article or a few blog posts to see whether your keywords are actually showing up — or if you are burying them.

Meeting notes & transcripts

Feed a transcript in to visualise the topics that dominated the conversation.

Classroom & training

Give students a text and ask them to predict the top words first, then reveal the cloud.

Social media graphics

A word cloud of brand-related terms makes a strong carousel slide or thumbnail.

How to make a word cloud that actually reads well

Give it enough text

A few hundred words minimum. With too little input, frequency differences collapse and every word looks the same size.

Keep the stopword filter on

"The", "and", "of" always win by volume and never tell you anything. Strip them unless you are doing a stylistic analysis.

Raise the minimum length

Set min length to 4 or 5 to cut short connector words the stopword list misses. The bigger themes surface immediately.

Cap the word count

50–80 words gives readable contrast. Above 120, smaller words become noise that crowds the layout.

Pre-process compound terms

Join words that belong together with an underscore (customer_support, dark_mode) so they stay as one token in the cloud.

Export SVG for anything that scales

SVG stays sharp at any size. Use PNG only when your destination (Instagram, a Word doc) requires it.

When a word cloud is the wrong tool

Word clouds are best for themes, not for numbers. If you want precise comparison, reach for a bar chart.

Use a word cloud when

  • You want a fast, visual read on what a block of text is about.
  • You are presenting qualitative data to a non-technical audience.
  • You want an illustrative slide, not an analytical one.

Pick a chart instead when

  • !You need to compare exact counts — eye estimates of font size are unreliable.
  • !You are tracking change over time — clouds don't show trends.
  • !You have fewer than 20 distinct words — a table is clearer.

Frequently asked questions

Is this word cloud generator really free?
Yes. There is no signup, no credit card, no watermark, and no export limit. Paste your text, generate, and download as PNG or SVG.
How does the word cloud generator work?
The tool counts how often each word appears in your text, removes common filler words by default, then sizes each word by its frequency. Words are placed on an Archimedean spiral with collision detection so they do not overlap.
What file formats can I download?
PNG for slide decks, social posts, and documents. SVG for clean, infinitely scalable graphics that stay sharp on print, billboards, or any high-DPI screen.
Can I paste a long text or article?
Up to 50,000 characters per run. For books or transcripts longer than that, paste in sections and generate a cloud per section.
Does the tool send my text to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Your text is never uploaded, logged, or stored, which makes the tool safe for customer reviews, survey responses, and internal notes.
Why are common words like "the" and "and" missing?
Those are filler words and would dominate any word cloud without adding meaning. The tool strips a standard English stopword list by default. Untick "Remove common words" if you want them included.
How is a word cloud different from a tag cloud?
They are the same visual idea. "Tag cloud" is the older term from blog tagging in the 2000s; "word cloud" is the modern name used in presentations and analytics.
Can I use the image commercially?
Yes. You own everything you generate. Use your cloud in reports, slide decks, websites, products, client deliverables, or print.
