Instagram DMs are no longer end-to-end encrypted, and this page said otherwise until August 2026. First, Check It Is Actually Deleted

A thread that has dropped out of your inbox is more often filtered than deleted, and every check below takes seconds:

1. Search the inbox. Open Messages and search the person's username directly. A thread far down a long inbox is easy to mistake for a missing one.
2. Check Message Requests. If they are not someone you follow, or if you never replied, the conversation may be sitting in requests rather than your main inbox.
3. Check the other inbox tab. Professional accounts split messages into Primary and General, and a thread in General is invisible from Primary.
4. Check on another logged-in device before you delete anything else, in case one device has not synced.

A note on "archived chats": many guides give a confident menu path for this. The link expires. Once the email arrives you have roughly four days to download before it stops working, and then you have to request the whole export again. Do not file the request and forget about it.

Method 2: Check Connected Accounts

If your Instagram and Facebook accounts were connected through Accounts Center (Settings and privacy → Accounts Center → Accounts), some conversations were handled by Meta's shared inbox and may be visible in Facebook Messenger.

They are fetched from Meta's servers and cached for display. There is no local message database to carve, so a deep scan of your phone has nothing to find.

The clearest evidence is what the vendors themselves publish. Gbyte Recovery, which this page links to, lists the chat apps it supports on its own iPhone data recovery page: Text Messages, iMessage, WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business, LINE, WeChat and Messenger. Instagram is not on that list. The same vendor's blog nonetheless carries an article promising its tool can recover deleted Instagram chats "even if they were recently removed". When a company's product page and its blog disagree about what the product does, believe the product page.

That is not a knock on the software. Gbyte, Dr.Fone, iMyFone and DiskDigger are real tools that genuinely recover photos, texts and WhatsApp history. They are being marketed against a search query they cannot answer, because "recover deleted Instagram messages" is a high-volume query and someone has to rank for it.

What you are risking if you try anyway:

• Money, for a scan that will surface cached images at best, not message text
• Your account, if the "app" is one of the ones that asks for your Instagram login. Nothing legitimate needs it.
• Your device, if a guide tells you to root or jailbreak first. That removes the protections keeping other apps out of your data, to reach a database that is not there.
